Dangers Lurking in Flood Waters

7/9/2021 (Permalink)

  • After the storm has passed, you never know what may be lurking in the flooded basement.  Be aware that snakes and other animals may be in your house.
  • Understand that there is a huge risk of electrocution. Make sure that no one touches any electrical equipment if it is wet or if you are standing in water. Check to make sure that someone has turned off the electricity to prevent electric shock if it is safe to do so.  Do not go in the water unless you are sure that the power is off.  Have an electrician check it.
  • Avoid wading in floodwater, which can be contaminated and also contain dangerous debris. Underground or downed power lines can also electrically charge the water.
  • Use a generator or other gasoline-powered machinery ONLY outdoors and away from windows.
