When the Temperature Drops in early Winter or late Spring

12/18/2020 (Permalink)

When the temperature drops in late Spring or early Winter, those of us who live in the Midwest with basements need to shut off the water lines to the outside hose spigots.  After shutting off the water, open the spigots to drain the water that may be between the shutoff valve and the spigot.  Water that is trapped between a closed shutoff and a closed valve can expand with freezing temperatures causing the water line to rupture.  After shutting off the valve in the waterline, wait a few minutes and check it again in 15 minutes to verify that there are no leaks.  Globe valves have packings around the valve stem that can become dry and as a consequence lose the ability to seal. Remember, we are available 24/7. Call us at SERVPRO of Ozaukee County at 262-242-8888.
